After a year away from the blog what better reason to come back but the PTI blog hop!

I liked the idea of using bookprint but really wanted to give it a specific theme so I used one of the sentiments from Birthday Basics to create the background strip. The simple circles die cut hides where everything meets in the middle.

I also wanted to use small flowers in the circles based on those in the inspiration picture. These are actually the centers of the flowers from the Simple Sunflower set.

So call me crazy but the only thing I've really done on the Papertrey Ink website up until now was shop! But I'm slowly discovering all of the other fun happenings - like the blog hop. Here are the details for this month:

This Papertrey Ink set fell into the category of "I didn't think I needed it until I was shown the error of my ways by the design team" - please tell me this happens to other people.

The very day it arrived I spent my night copying all of their creations - with my ~~simple~~ lazy twist. So I'm happy to say within 24 hours of receiving this set every image had been used!

Here is my only original creation. I had one more seniment left to use and I just didn't want to color ALL of those little flowers so this was my way to cheat:

And here are my lazy-fied copies:

The first was Michelle Wooderson's botanical project found here. Her project is far more detailed but I was too chicken to try and copy it exactly. I used a Stampin-up blender pen w/ Certainly Celery and Sahara Sand ink to color the image:

Then there was all of the Nichole Heady goodness. You can find all of the inspiration for these here.

I believe Nichole used Q-tips to apply the white ink to her flowers but mine were upstairs, dangerously close to my sleeping children so I used my blender pen again:

Next up was this version which required much less coloring:

And finally this no-coloring version (which probably ends up being one of my favorite). Nichole's version used this for the inside of a card but I thought it would work on the outside just as well:

Happy Mother's Day and a Tuesday Trigger Challenge

Hope all of the mom's out there that read this blog are having a wonderful Mother's Day!

Here is a card I made for my mom using this weeks Tuesday Trigger for inspiration:

I wish I had a larger Mother's Day sentiment but I guess the focus needs to stay on the butterflies anyway (and it took me a shockingly short amount of time to arrange them - normally that would be at least a 20 minute project!)

Here is another card I made for my aunt (who loves all things Nantucket):

Both of these cards were made using Hero Arts Antique Engravings set (and it is all LateBlossom's fault that I *had* to buy that set - I had an Archiver's coupon, what's a girl to do!)

This is the card I gave to my grandma (which has already been posted here but here it is again just in case you didn't see it the first time around):

That takes card of all the special women in my life - I am grateful for each and every one of them and all that they do to help me and my family!

Have a Ball

This set from Papertrey the only other one that I actually completed my "use every image" plan for this month. I don't actually have the All Star Team set that this is supposed to coordinate with but I think it's easy enough to use on its own and a super value at only $5!

First I knocked out three of the images with this birthday card:

Next I used the baseball image with the underlying circle stamped in Papertrey's Pure Snow ink:

(You know I like to use my hand drawn boxes around things but these cards are particularly uneven for some reason - I promise I wasn't crafting under the influence!)

So the only image I had left was the fill in image for the larger balls so I thought to myself "it doesn't really need to be a ball at all" and used it as a stand alone image on this card:

All that for $5!!

Three Cheers for Chairs Challenge

The timing couldn't be better since I just invested in the Chair-ished set from Papertrey last month *and* it was the first set that I applied my "must use every image from the set" plan. Here is my favorite:

The images in this set are easy to cut out - I loved looking through my scraps to find just the right patterns to use.

I thought the back of these chairs looked kind of "heart-ish" - again super easy to cut out.

No actual chair in this one but the cute dog image is from the set - he works well all on his own (the tag is the Papertrey Mat Stack 1 die with the top and bottom trimmed off).

This was inspired by this post by Nichole (stamping on the felt for this chair - have I mentioned how easy they are to cut out?) and a complete copy of the design of this card by Heather Nichols.

One Layer Wednesday (on Saturday)

I really did *make* the card on Wednesday it just took me this long to photograph it (and a devil of a time I had doing that - so excuse the fact it's a ~~little~~ lot blown out). The challenge is from one of my favorite blogs, Simplicity, to create a one layer card using flock or glitter. I decided to go with Stickles over the stamped images (and some sketch inspiration from Papercrafts Go-to Sketches):

I orginally just stamped the circles from PTI's Around & About Sentiments but it just seemed to need something so I added the grid (uneven on purpose because sometimes I get a little wild that way).

If this weren't for a one layer card challenge I think I would have stamped each sentiment, circle punched them and then attached to the card with some dimensional adhesive. So that's another option.

And since it is National Scrapbooking Day I will give you a quick update on my Week in the Life project. I did manage to follow through for the entire week - yay me!! I have all of my photos loaded and ready to order. Here are a few favorites:

When I saw the sneak peek for this set I thought I would be able to be strong and pass on it. Then I saw this card on Lisa Johnson's blog and this one on Kim Hughes blog and I was powerless to resist it. So I copied (or cased or lifted or whatever the right term is here) their cards almost exactly:

Then since I had the chairs all lined up on my block after making the first card I went crazy and stamped them the other way and just added a sentiment:

Doesn't this set make THE cutest backgrounds ever?!

Since this card has the earth on it I thought it would qualify as a good post for today:

This card was inspired by Nichole (you can see it towards the bottom of this post). Yet another moment of having to raise my fists to the heavens and call out "Curse you Papertrey Ink design team for making me spend more money!" But that die, that stamp, that sentiment - I neeeeeded it.

Papertrey received lots of my hard earned money this month and I've had a blast playing with everything the last few days - more to "chair" with you tomorrow!

Color Cue Challenge {3}

I stumbled upon this color challenge by way of Maile Belles blog (lots of fun stuff there!). Check out the details here. Not that I need to add another company to my stamp buying addiction but there are some cute things in Wplus9 shop!

Okay no shopping! Back to the challenge:

I used SU Basic Gray for the gray/blue, SU Crushed Curry for the Golden Yellow and Papertrey's Melon Berry for melon. Lovey dove dove that combination!

Throw in some cute new Unity stamps and I think I have a winner! I also used one of Teri Anderson's sketches from the Sketches to Go idea book for design inspiration (it's the very first sketch turned on it's side for those who have the book - and if you don't you should!).

One Layer Challenge

A fun challenge from Kristina Werner's blog to make a one layer card. Check out her's here - it's flat out adorable (hehe I crack myself up). We love watching her video's every Monday and Friday. And by we I mean me and my four year old who comes running whenever she hears the intro music yelling "Is it a card video?!". She is especially excited whenever there is "e-bossing" involved. So if you're reading this Kristina - Isabel wants more e-bossing!

Curtain Call Color Challenge: Act 26/FTL 86

I don't usually combined challenges but I was already planning on creating this card for the Clean and Simple FTL sketch and when I saw this weeks Curtain Call Color Challenge it was like a match made in heaven!

I had to substitute Papertrey's Soft Stone cardstock for Going Gray but what a fresh combination Crushed Curry makes when paired with any gray!

This gray/yellow/orange combination seems to be very popular on the challenge circut this week! Look for more coming the next few days.

I've had this idea in my head of embossing this flower image in white with a patterned background like this one since I first bought the set. This seemed like just the time to use it!

Oh and that "thinking of you" sentiment was from a KI Memories set I purchased at JoAnn's for - get this - 97 cents!! Couldn't pass that by.

A non-card project

Here's a little tidbit - I actually started out as a scrapbooker. The cards came later.

I still create layouts now and then - most often as part of my Quickutz design team responsibilities (lately that's the sole reason most of my photos find their way onto scrapbook pages at all). If you'd like a peek at that gallery look here (there's a good mix of projects - so if cards are your only interest you can choose the type of projects you're viewing on the left).

So I'm going to start a little non-card project following the Ali Edward's A Week in the Life concept. I've completed one of these albums already - a few years ago when I attended CKU - lots has changed so it's probably a good time for an update!

I'm going to put about zero creative effort into designing this album - I'm following Ali's formula exactly. You can find details about that here. But I am going to make a card a day using the scraps left from the album and inspired by the page designs I'm going to use. So that will give me something a little more original to share.

Here are the supplies I've chosen to use:

The best part is I'm only using supplies I already have on hand:

Papers are all from Stampin' Up pulled from different packs of DSP
White cardstock from American Crafts - I bought a pack at Archiver's and found that the white is usually too bright for my taste but it works well here so I can finally use that up - yay!
Baseball card holders from my now defunct couponing craze.

I may purchase some digital elements - but not until I take a stab at creating them myself and then deciding that, as usual, Ali's are better.

I doubt I'll be posting my layouts each day - my plan is to collect, take notes and photos and assemble later. But I'll be sure to share some of the album when it's complete - and all of the cards!

Hopefully by putting this out there it will force me to actually follow through - wish me luck!

Curtain Call Color Challenge: Act 25

I decided to make myself use the Good Neighbors set that has sat unused (at least the houses) since I received it:

This is one of those cards that has no plan at all and turns into something I really love. I especially like the "home" part (Studio Calico alphabet stamps with a line hand drawn with the matching Stampin' Up marker) - I'm going to try that again for sure.

I don't usually provide details of stamp set names in my supply lists (because I'm too lazy to keep track). But if anyone ever has a specific question on which stamps came from where just leave a comment and I'll be happy to answer.

Papertrey March DT Challenge

Nothing like waiting until the last minute! If you haven't seen the post with this months beautiful color combination challenge be sure to check it out here.

I decided to use Lisa Johnson's color combination because I just received a new pack of Sweet Blush paper that was itching to be used - plus it has Kraft in there too ;).

I used my Through the Trees set and I challenged myself to make a card using each of the main tree images. Here is the first and probably my favorite:

Next is a design that is basically a copy of Nichole's creation that made me say "I must have it":

And last was this little square card that really does look better in person - the embossing just gets a little lost in the photo:

ColourQ Challenge #25

What a great spring color combination for this weeks challenge:

I immediately knew I wanted to use my new chocolate bunny stamp for this and I like the way the colors overlap on the eggs in the inspiration photo. So I stamped Tempting Turquoise onto Certainly Celery to try and replicate that look:

(The bunny is stamped with Chocolate Chip onto Close to Cocoa - perfect chocolate goodness!)

Polka Dot Basics 1.5 Version 2

I knew I would be addicted to these dots - if you missed my original essay on their discovery look here.

So this weeks Cards Blog challenge to use eight or more colors immediately made me think of a rainbow of glorious rows of dots! I'm going to assume that black and white count as colors for this (otherwise I'm a color short).

I just opened up my Bold Brights cubes and starting picking. Then I went in search of a large sentiment that would fit in my cute new label/die combination - well hello Say It With Style! A perfect fit. I think it holds its own against the busy background.

When you know they're going to throw it away...

Kids birthday cards probably always meet the trash can at some point, right? So I hate to spend tons of time on them but they still need to be cute.

"Cute" isn't really a word I would use to describe by crafting style so I've been trying to find some appropriate stamp sets that I can use for kids cards. And thanks to the clearance endcap at Target I just found a great one! At 75% off - a mere $2.48 - this may just be one of my best stamping bargains ever. Especially now that I've used it and been super duper happy with the results!

The set consists of quotes like this one along with a variety of kid-friendly images like the heart. I just stamped and added the line around it with a black marker. I love that black marker trick! Either by hand for a messy look or with a ruler for a neat look - somehow it just makes things look "finished" to me.

The second one didn't photograph as well - the purple butterfly looks really light - but it's equally as cute in person. Pinky swear.

And you certainly cannot argue with that quote!

Poppy Seed Challenge #2

Major A-HA! moment for me with this card!! More about that later...

I'm making the Poppy Seed Challenge on time this week:

Another excuse to use new Papertrey goodies! This time I wanted to use the Delightful Dahlia set - but I couldn't make it work with the button part of the challenge so I decided to put at least one of the GIANT buttons that come in Papertrey's vintage button packs to use:

Now the A-HA moment. One of the first sets I bought from Papertrey was the Polka Dot Basics set. It's a great set but soon Polka Dot Basics II came out and I began lusting after it's cute, cozy, smooshed together dots. But my wishlist is far too long to buy another polka dot set so I've just had to make it work.

So when I stamped the first set of dots I said to myself, "self, it looks like there is enough room in between the dots to offset this stamp, stamp it again and make a bunch of cute, smooshed together dots". So thinking I was so smart that's just what I did - only it doesn't come out looking anything like Polka Dot Basics II. Dare I say I like it even better!! Cute little lined up rows of dots!

Polka Dot Basics III (or maybe Polka Dot Basics 1.5) - you saw it here first folks!

Honestly, I'm sure I'm not the first one to figure this out but let me bask in the glow of discovery for just a minute more.

And just because I couldn't help myself at this point - I made another card with the Delightful Dahlia set (it just doesn't qualify for the challenge - no buttons):

For the record both of these cards were made on Soft Stone cardstock (although the first one looks off to me).

ColourQ Challenge #24

So this weeks challenge was a little tricky for me because I don't usually buy much in the way of in colors. I have never taken the plunge with inks so it's cardstock only.

I had just received a Papertrey order and really wanted to use the Life set I just purchased but the idea in my head involved lots of white cardstock and colored ink. I think I need to just suck it up and buy the in color inks - I wish they would just make a little set of cubes!

So I ended up with this:

The buttons ended up there because it just looked naked in that corner. I really do love the Apricot and Coral together but I couldn't get the original idea out of my head so since everything was already out I made a few color substitutions and came up with this:

Ah - better. In place of Baha Breeze I used Sage Shadow and in place of Rich Razzleberry I used Bravo Burgundy for the sentiment.

My tendency when it comes to color combinations like this is to use lots of one neutral color and little bits of all the other colors. I have a hard time using a significant amount of any one color mixed with that many other choices. Then I see other peoples cards and realize it can totally work - just not when I do it!

When it rains....

Well that saying has fit our lives perfectly here. In the last two weeks I've had 5 assignment projects to complete, 4 cases of the stomach flu (one for each family member), 2 funerals and 1 surgery for our eight year old. Needless to say time for cardmaking just for fun was all but lost.

Hopefully things can get back on track this week!

Today I'm going to share a card I made for a challenge that ended somewhere around the time all the above mentioned craziness began. This was a new challenge I found at Poppy Paperie (if you click here it will take you to the current challenge that is going on now). But the first challenge was to use a flower stamp, yellow and some bling. Here was my poor little entry that never had a chance to participate:

I love how "spring-y" it turned out (especially since we have been enjoying very spring like weather here the last few days!)

Good Morning Sunshine - Day 3

This card is similar to my first card but with a little more color included in the pattern ( and a differnt orientation). The dominate color in the paper is green so I used that for my background. I brought out the blue with a small scalloped edge rather than using a punched shape near the sentiment. The little dots below the sentiment came with the set and are nearly the exact size of the dots in the pattern - love it when things like that happen!

I have a series of posts scheduled for this week all using this Good Morning Sunshine designer series paper pack from Stampin Up'. Last year I purchased a sampler that included a 6x6 sheet of all the new papers. My intention was to make mucho cards with it but I've not really followed through with that plan. So I'm going to try to do a few of these "series" with different papers to force myself to use these poor papers that have been collecting too much dust.

I sometimes have a difficult time using patterned paper on my cards - I tend to want to use bitty little pieces so it doesn't seem too busy. So I'm trying to design some cards that really let the paper be the focal point.

For todays card I just used a piece of patterned paper trimmed to 3 1/2 X 4 3/4 leaving a nice little border around the edge. This is where I love all the coordination with Stampin' Up products - a tone on tone pattern on a matching cardstock still leaves me with a nice, simple card.

More birdcage!

Title said in my best Christopher Walkin "More Cowbell" voice.

I started out creating the card in yesterdays post because I loved the way the stamp filled up the bracket shape of my card. Then I proceeded to make two more cards with it - three cards within two days of purchase! That's just crazy talk!

Here was the second. I wanted to just simply stamp it in black rather than the embossing I did yesterday. I knew the birds *had* to be yellow. And I also colored in the bases of the cages black:

I wanted to do something a little more colorful for the last card (and switch it around to the portrait orientation). I thought about coloring each of the birds a different color but decided to use the color on the cages and let the stamping and birds be brown:

I think I might have preferred the brown to be black but I was just trying to be different. It's not easy to tell in this picture but I did cut out two of the cages and popped them up for some dimension on this one - here's a better look:

Cards Blog Challenge

This weeks challenge was to use a card base that anything but a square or rectange. Thankfully I have enough Quickutz dies to choke a horse so my shape options were plentiful. I decided to use the bracket shape along with this new stamp (watch for more options on this one later):

I embossed the body of the stamp with white embossing powder on kraft so I would still have the option of coloring those cute little birds.

Once I started playing with this stamp I just couldn't stop - so look for two more options coming up in the next few days.

This weeks Tuesday Trigger was an inspiration card from the new Stamp It magazine (which I just purchased and haven't even had a chance to crack open yet!):

Yummy yellow and kraft with a touch of black (and my next Papertrey order that background stamp will be mine!).

I started playing around with my new Year of Flowers: Violets set that just arrived and remembered the latest FTL sketch:

So I combined the two for this finished product:

The violet is much more obvious is real life (it's embossed with white on the yellow). I see myself using that flower more often as an outline like this rather than coloring it in but it's nice to have options, right?

Big Bold Wishes

I love this set from Papertrey - I never realized what I was missing sticking with generally small greetings. Plus the little "subtitles" can always be paired with other main greetings (what about a die cut sentiment).

This one just took a quick trip to my scraps pile (okay it probably wasn't so quick I tend to agonize over those choices).

Very similar layout - just simplified a little bit. I probably would have never thought to stamp the smaller sentiment over top but that's why I love the Papertrey design team!

Other than the Papertrey stamps I have no idea where those papers are from - but if you have a specific question about these cards just leave a comment.

As I searched through my stamps for something that looked "tile-ish" I decided on a stamp from Circle Circus. It was large enough that I could still get a 1" square from the center of it:

I also inked the edge of each of the squares in the same color to help give them a little definition.

Well this couldn't have been a more perfect theme for this weeks CAS challenge! I immediately remembered that I had stamped this floral image on a leftover strip of cardstock just to have a little fun coloring. And they've been sitting very sad and unused on my desk ever since. But it doesn't get much more spring-y so I finally decided to use them:

Curtain Call Color Challenge Act 17

I knew I wanted to use the Circle Circus stamps for this but I don't have going gray ink - I tried both basic gray and sahara sand and decided I liked sahara sand better as a substitute. I hope everyone had a wonderful Valentine's Day! I wish I could say that I didn't have a card to post yesterday because I was swept away in the romance of the day but really it was because I've been sick and had no desire to even sit down at my desk and create anything since last Tuesday!

But last night the mojo was back so I tried to do a few challenges that I hadn't missed. Today's card was a challenge on Betsy Veldman's blog to incorporate paper piecing into your project. I usually think of using die cuts for this kind of technique but I remember a particular stamp I had thought would be great for this. Here's my final project:

A simple Hot Spot stamp from Archiver's and some pink patterned paper scraps is pretty much the whole store here! And this is on a kraft cardstock base - although it seems to have some weird blue cast to it.

I ended up with this cute Stampin' Up Hostess set but was a little stumped by what to do with it once it arrived. Since each sentiment already has a little image incorporated into it pairing it with more images seemed like too much. Then I had one of those out of the blue ideas - I just love those!

Check it out - most of these sentiments will fit in the modern label punch and then - whoa - how fantastic does that punch look over this Vintage Label stamp?

What I ended up with was a super simple design that would work for any occassion!

Curtain Call Color Challenge - Act 16

So how could I not finish a color challenge that includes kraft, right? Such a classic combination from Stacey this week!

I have to give credit to my three year old for part of today's card - she loooooves to help me emboss (e-boss as she likes to call it). So she had picked this background stamp and wanted to emboss with white on a scrap of kraft. I had never tried that combination before but I loved it! For the card I just used PTI's vintange cream ink (sorry no e-bossing) and the effect is just as nice. I think I've finally found a way to use this stamp!

PTI Emboss Resist Challenge

Emboss resist is one of these techniques I've seen and always wanted to try but just never got around to it. So when this challenge was posted on Nichole Heady's blog and I looked through the beautiful examples created by the Papertrey DT I was finally inspired enough to take the plunge!

This is a little more "shabby chic" as compared to what I normally do - but I think it keeps the clean and simple look well enough that it still looks like "me". I'll set this card aside to save for the end of the school year rush on teacher thank you cards!

How about purple? I would also like to take this opportunity to introduce you to Kraft cardstocks sweet little cousin that I used for the base of this card. I recently found this cardstock at one of my favorite paper sources - Hollo's Papercraft. Who doesn't love paper by the pound? It's the perfect shade when white is too bright and cream is too yellow. It's a little hard to tell in the picture but there are little flecks just like my beloved kraft.

Embellish Color Challenge with Ribbon

Alright I have plenty of ribbon to use up so maybe I should participate in this challenge more than once!

For reasons I really don't understand I had a hard time working with these colors. Individually I love each and every one of them but putting them together proved to be a challenge. My final verdict was that I was using too much of each of them so I decided to back off the turquoise a little bit and just added a small bit of string. In the end I was happy with it but it took way to long to get there!

Learning My Way Around a Copic Marker

I tried to resist, I really did. But I lost the battle when PTI gave the matching Copic marker colors to their cardstock. So I'm very slowly trying to start a small collection of Copic markers. They do color beautifully - I'm still working on the whole blending part. Here's one of my first attempts:

I stamped the heart onto PTI's white cardstock and cut it out after I colored it. As a side note - how much do I love PTI's snow white and vintage cream inks!! Finally a white/cream ink that actually covers and doesn't take forever to dry!

It's all so soft and sweet so like Stacey I couldn't get the idea of doing a baby card out of my head. I just received a big box of stampin' goodness yesterday so I used a few new things on this card:

I cut small slits on either side of the monkey's tail to slide the branch through (which is from SU's new bird punch). I considered ribbon at the bottom but in real life I liked it better without - now that I'm looking at the picture I'm doubting that choice. Oh well - done is done.

Okay does anyone else have a picture of that little devil cartoon character named Hot Stuff and think this challenge was more a reference to the person making it rather than the stuff used to make it?

Or am I just totally aging myself by admitting I remember Hot Stuff at all?

Anyway....here is the card made with "old stuff" from my stash. The sentiment sticker is an oldie from Making Memories that I always keep through every purge thinking I can use them for baby cards. The paper is some old American Crafts that I still love and wish I could get more of (and that's another 4" square scrap card). The button is super old too but I don't remember who made it.

Well the blog may not be pretty yet but hopefully this card is! I've been "watching" so many challenges lately - always thinking up ideas but never getting around to the doing part. So here is the first officially completed challenge!

Natasha's sketches always appeal to my simple side -

I created the label block by using a mask created from a Quickutz die and distress ink. I'm really happy with the way that turned out - I'm sure I'll revisit that technique again!
